Paula's Caucus Speech

On February 6, 2018, I had the honor of visiting all the precinct rooms at the Caucus held at Stillwater Middle School. The following is the text of the speech I shared with attendees. I welcome any opportunity to discuss these ideas further as we prepare for the March 4 Convention. Please contact the Campaign if you would like to arrange for a conversation.

Good evening.  Thank you all so much for being here tonight.  My name is Paula O’Loughlin and I am fighting to be your next State Representative.  I’d like to take just a couple of minutes this evening to share a little about who I am and why I’m running to represent you at the Capitol.

Like each of you, I love this community.  My husband Sean and I know how blessed we are to be living and raising our kids here in the St. Croix Valley.  We have two children: Kyra is a sophomore at Stillwater Area High School and Daniel is a 7th grader at Oak-Land Middle School.  Like all parents, we want them to have the opportunities they need to live their very best lives.

Paul Wellstone said that politics is about the improvement of people’s lives.  At the heart of it, that is why I am running.  I want to make a positive difference in the lives of the people who live in this community that I love.

I was lucky to be raised by life-long Minnesotans and life-long Democrats who instilled in me the Minnesota Values of showing up, giving back to your community and standing up to fight for what you believe in.  My dad is a veteran who fought for our country and my mom was a union nurse who for over 30 years, fought for her patients.  Sean and I are proud to be raising our own kids with those same core Minnesota Values.

I want to fight for universal, affordable healthcare for each and every one of us, particularly with a focus on mental health.  For those of you who have personally experienced or have a loved one who has suffered from crippling anxiety or debilitating depression, you know how critical it is that you have the resources when you need them and resources that you can actually afford.  We need to stop talking about the rising mental health needs in our community and actually get real solutions into the hands of real people who need support.

I want to fight for the health of our environment – for our land, our air, our river and our lakes. Our children and our grandchildren need this protection NOW.

I want to fight for our kids. Strong public schools are the bedrock of this democracy and our party believes that every child – regardless of where they live or where they came from – deserves every opportunity to succeed so they can have a brighter future.

And I want to fight for the civil rights for every human being.  I fought so that my brother and his husband would have the same right and privileges to marry that I have.  We need a representative who will see our shared humanity and treat all of us with the respect and dignity that we deserve.

I have worked on Wall Street where I saw firsthand how the greed eroded the middle class and I have spent my entire professional career advocating for kids in public education.  I believe I am the most qualified and most experienced candidate to stand up and fight so that we can have the change we so desperately need here in 39B.

I am here tonight asking for your support.  I am asking that you join our growing team of individuals who are more determined than ever to retire Representative Kathy Lohmer.  I don’t need to remind anyone here about the devastating, damaging impact of the policies and legislation she has sponsored and supported. We need a representative who will stand up and fight for the values we hold dear.  I humbly ask for your support to help me win this seat and retire Kathy Lohmer.

Thank you again for being here tonight.  My name is Paula O’Loughlin and I am running to be your next State Representative.
